Adyar Theosophical Society/ Banyan Tree

For a twelfth grader like me awaiting college admissions, the long summer vacation kills for sure....Wanting to get lost in some not very known location, I started to plan along with my friends. We then came across blogs on the Adyar Banyan tree, a 450 year old banyan, known locally as Adyar aala maram, whose aerial roots cover some 60,000 sq m.Known as the "Huddleston Gardens," the Theosophical Society garden lies on the south bank of the Adyar River and covers 260 acres(from wiki)...

We got there by 8 AM but since the society opens only at half past 8 we went to a nearby tea shop and had a tea. The tea was tasty and costed only 5 bucks :)

We then signed the register and got inside. It was great to be inside the garden, walking below the trees.....After 10 minutes, we noticed some strange movement in the nearby bushes...It was a mongoose. But it quickly fled the scene.

We then entered a small religious structure.....it was very peaceful and had elements of every religion and we guys really loved the serenity of the place.

We then resumed our walk and passed through a lot of bushes, a coconut farm and reached a cactii garden

It was a really great place and by this point of time we couldn't hear any vehicle noises. WE could also see a large variety of birds-parrots, golden orioles, cuckoos, bulbuls..we were also able to see a lot of spiders and butterfiles. It is reported that even jackals are found inside the Society campus but we were not able to see any of them...we also did not not get to see a single snake!

We finally reached the banyan. There are people who often say that this is the largest Banyan tree in the world.. At present the Banyan has been fenced to protect it. It is really dark near the banyan because of the shade..

We then walked to the other entrance and saw large fruit bats hanging in a tree

Apart from all this, the place is really scenic....really a treat for nature lovers..Entry closes by 10:30AM and opens again only at noon. It is located on the banks of the Adyar river which adds to its beauty.

How to reach: there is a bus stop near the Society's entrance..(the stop next to Andhra Sabha)

Entrance: Free

    2. For someone from Anna University (or for that matter, anyone who stays south of Thiru-vi-ka bridge), it probably makes more sense to get down near the Fortis-Malar Hospital after Adyar Signal and cross the main road. The Besant Nagar entrance is not very conveniently located - it is on Besant Avenue road. If you are getting down near Adyar Signal, look for Hotel Esthell (it is located right where the Besant Avenue starts) or Adyar Post Office (slightly further down Besant Avenue) - the garden entrance is about a kilometer down on this road.
